VALLE SAN GIORGIO
Valle San Giorgio is set deep in the greenery in the heart of the Regional
Park of the Euganean Hills between Cinto Euganeo and Arquà Petrarca.
It is easy to reach by car from the motorway A4-A13 Padova-Bologna, Terme
Euganee exit if you come
from Venice and Monselice exit if you come from Bologna.
REGIONAL PARK OF THE EUGANEAN HILLS
The Regional Park of the Euganean Hills covers 200.000 hectares and
includes 15 small towns.
The sequence of 81 hills of varying heights and shapes creates a particular
landscape that immediately catches the traveller's eye. The geomorphological
characteristics of the Park derive from the volcanic activity during the
Tertiary Era. Here you can find numerous types of vegetations: from the
typical Mediterranean shrublands to chestnut groves and mixed oak woods.
Among the protected fauna you can admire a wide variety of birds: from the
small, lively robin to the more imposing species such as the sparrow hawk
and barn owl.
The small towns in the Euganean Hills, starting from Arquà Petrarca, very
near to Valle San Giorgio, are full of historical and artistic witnesses.
All of them are easily reached over accessible roadways by car or
charming pathways to walk or cycle enjoying the tranquillity of the
surrounding area.
The Regional Park of the Euganean Hills started in 1989 and was called a "permanent laboratory" for environmental protection where even agricultural
activities are protected: olive oil, the various types of cheese, D.O.C.
wines (including the well known red wines Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon,
whites as Chardonnay and sparkling wines such as Serprino or Moscato Fiori
d'Arancio) and honey.
SURROUNDINGS
The nearest place to Valle San Giorgio is Cinto Euganeo, wellknown because
of the ancient Roman underground aqueducts that have a network of canals
under Monte Vendevolo.
The aqueducts supplied the area all the way to Este with water capturing the
flow of the Faedo and San Giorgio valley springs channelled to small natural
grottoes.
Then there is the Cava Bomba pit complex, now transformed from an extraction
site into a Geopaleontological Museum presenting artefacts from the Euganean
Hill area.
From the other side of Valle San Girorgio there is the wonderful Arquà that
was chosen as home by Petrarca, the greatest poet of '300, where he died and
now you can see Petrarca's tomb on the church yard of the Chiesa di S. Maria
Assunta. Arquà became Arquà Petrarca in his honour.
Here time seems to stand still, keeping all the magic of the Middle Ages
intact. Arquà develops at the foot of the Castello and Ventolone mountains
and you can admire the same buildings that were already there at the dawn of
the year 1000. The town is intact with the small roads and ancient
buildings. Petrarca's house has been recently restored and holds an
exhibition dedicated to the poet. Then there are two religious sites: the
Oratorio della S.S. Trinità and the Chiesa di S. Maria Assunta. Arquà owes
its great fortune to the presence of Petrarca and the magnificence of the
Carraresi, the aristocracy of Paodova and patrons.
We cannot forget Teolo in a beautiful position among the loveliest hills of
Monte Venda, Monte della Madonna and Monte Grande and Torreglia chosen by
the Camaldolensian monks to build their Hermitage on the Monte Rua.
